How much hatred spilled over onto the new Call of Duty. First, Sony removes it from the Russian PS Store , then it is criticized in the news , and after the release one of the most terrible fears is confirmed: in the game the sea is so unjustified and undisguised chernukha that even Balabanov would be embarrassed.

For all its merits, Modern Warfare is full of absurdities, which are unclear how they leaked to the release. I have to admit that for the first time in the history of the series, multiplayer has pleased far more than single-player mode, and there were some complaints.

Bravo 6, I’m going to kill

The storyline campaign is surprising in a bad sense: how the Infinity Ward missed the production of such a weak scenario is a real mystery. Throughout the game, you seem to be closely watching the confrontation between two artists: the director, who makes a strong military drama, and the screenwriter, who decided that again we need to do fabulous superhero.

Exclusively from the point of view of gameplay, the campaign cannot be faulted – in this regard, Modern Warfare is kept at the level of the best parts of the franchise. Sniper duel adjusted for distance and wind, defense of the American embassy in the spirit of the series “Homeland” , bomb disposal on the chest of a suicide bomber – in general, there are more than enough unusual situations.

I would also like to praise the attention of developers to small details – for example, to animations. When you play for the young, still inexperienced rebel commander Farrah, you can see that she even holds the weapon in a different way: she reloads it ineptly and generally has poor control over recoil. You are even surprised at such pleasant trifles from a habit. Wow, they say, did a good job. More often so.

When interrogating the Butcher’s family, you can do without blood. And you can shoot. But only as a terrorist – they will not let harm innocent civilians

Tactical cleansing of buildings under the command of Captain Price has been completed with a bang: you have to act with surgical precision and monitor goals, among which there are civilian ones. You do not know if another scared person will reach for weapons that lie nearby. Give the victim a chance and take a chance or pre-shoot just in case? It is at such moments that Infinity Ward try to portray the very “gray morality”.

True, most often the game itself will tell you who can be neutralized and who can’t, and this terribly spoils the concept announced by the developers. In theory, you must decide whether you are ashamed to kill innocent people or not, but the studio did not have the courage to give players a full carte blanche. And so all the talk about the “new war” and “new sensory experience” ultimately comes down to the tablet “you are in the civilian, you can’t return to the previous point of conservation”.

Heroes who, in the story, hide their presence from local authorities, do not hesitate to cut through the streets of St. Petersburg in cars with British numbers. Seem to have cut through the window to Europe

But all this pales against the backdrop of the scenario, from which I want to tear my hair out on my head. History is conditionally divided into two parallel lines: the conflict with terrorists who stole (well, of course) chemical weapons, and the lawlessness of Russian soldiers in a country that is not at all like Syria. And if the part about terrorists is really interesting in some places, then the story about russkies is ridiculed even by foreigners .

It was as if the scriptwriter first wrote a classic action movie about Middle Eastern extremists, and then thought that the game lacked some kind of universal evil, and added the Russians. You probably heard imperishable jokes about eating children for breakfast and toys nailed to the floor? Here the plot resembles them. The evil General Barkov, an antagonist of Modern Warfare, has neither normal motivation nor any other human traits. Why is its form suspiciously similar to the Soviet one? Why, after a chemical attack on a small town, did he drive all the surviving women and children to a concentration camp? Well, because angry.

The only bright spot in the story is Captain Price’s new incarnation. It embodies all the postulates that Infinity Ward declared the key to the plot. Cold calculation, charisma, enormous combat experience and the same gray moral of armed conflicts: he will sacrifice a hostage, because there is no time to defuse the bomb, he will lead the prisoner’s family to interrogation and begin to threaten them with Russian roulette. The character is simply nice to see on the screen, for which you should thank actor Barry Sloan, who recorded the movements and voice of Price.

Instead of showing strife between politicians or intelligence agencies of different countries, the developers included a reference to the “Highway of Death” in the game. Only, unlike the real story, it was not the US Marines who committed the war crime, but the Russians again

Semper fi

Fortunately, the missions of the single-player mode are unexpectedly successfully compensated by the cooperative – it opens immediately after the credits, and, in fact, serves as an epilogue with its own story, heroes and gameplay chips.

You can go through it with a detachment of four people, where each user has their own “operator” (read, character) and a unique ability: for example, distribution of armor to comrades or a stock of reinforced cartridges. In addition, before the battle, you can choose the equipment for the purchase of which the points gained in the battles go away – this can be either a six-barrel turret, or a call to the AC130 or a support helicopter.

At first glance, it is difficult to understand how such abilities generally affect the game. Actually, some really have almost no effect, but the rest force them to seriously review their tactics. Instant restoration of armor to all comrades can pull a squad from the other world

I don’t know which genius wasp stung the developers, but the cooperative is played just fine. Although the choice of tasks is small (there are only four), all of them are long and complex, and most importantly, interesting. In one, you have to storm the airport, and then get on board the take-off plane, pick up the nuclear charge, quickly (in 20 seconds) jump out of it and wait for the evacuation. In another squad, you will have to mark boxes with important cargo, and to find the ones you need to stand at the computer and literally sort through each data folder. And all this under constant fire, where every mistake can be the last.

I have not experienced such pleasure from cooperative regimes for a long time. You cover a comrade with a machine gun, shoot the last clip – and that you have urine, you scream for your partner “FOUND ?!” because there is nothing to defend. He responded with a scream “YES NOW, THE LAST FOLDER REMAINED, GIVE AN ARMOR!”. And around the screams, the crack of machine gun bursts, helicopters overhead … Beauty.

Although, of course, there were some flaws. For example, you cannot close a squad so that random people do not join you; one of the players notes that the mode often crashes. But all this will soon be cured by patches – the main thing is that the mechanics themselves work perfectly. By the way, the map reserved for these missions is huge: the reserve for the future (or former?) Royal battle is immediately noticeable. But I hope that instead of it, the developers will focus on supporting special operations – they definitely succeeded.

Run shoot

Classic multiplayer also pleases – although, if you think about it, it is already difficult to call it “classic”. On the one hand, the dynamics here are straight from Modern Warfare 2 , and the setting is the same. And on the other – the innovations of a wagon and a small trolley.

For example, weapons have been thoroughly recycled – now they feel more real. The recoil seems to hit on the shoulder from the other side of the screen, and the sound is so impressive that you just want to rush about the map and shoot at the air with a hoot. Customization is also very pleasing: each module not only changes the appearance and functionality of the weapon, but also affects the characteristics, whether it is recoil, control, range, speed, and so on.

There are no end to any modules for weapons, skins, key rings, stickers and graffiti. You can get them through in-game tests, but some of them are painfully strange and make you play “dirty” – camping with a shotgun, for example

The volume of Infinity Ward content was approached on a grand scale. You can pump and unlock items here for months, like a starter. In addition, the modes in the game are enough to constantly get some fresh gaming experience. There is a classic team battle, and there is the good old “Find and Destroy”, where there are no rebirths and you need to play wisely. The latter has a separate variation called “Cyberattack”, where players are not divided into attackers and defenders, but simply fight for one bomb: whoever destroys the enemy’s point on the map with it will win.

There are two more newcomers: “Fire Contact” 2 on 2 and “Ground War” 32 on 32. The first is a good projectile for those who like intense matches, and the last is almost a copy of the “Capture” from Battlefield , with points and equipment. True, now it only looks like the first test of the pen, the first attempt by Infinity Ward in the “big” modes. You can find fault with the maps for the “Ground War” ad infinitum because they have serious conceptual problems: too many sniper dots, crooked flags, and physics of technology at the level “below the baseboard”. Managed armored personnel carriers are as if for show: they drive, shoot, and to hell with them.

Sniper rifles, killing with a single shot, also exacerbate the situation, but I personally liked the low TTK on huge maps. We have to run from shelter to shelter, actively use gadgets, think over the escape routes. It’s nice to see Call of Duty try something new.

The regime has one more global problem: everyone plays Call of Duty – that is, they camp on the roofs, don’t communicate with the squad, play solos and fill in meaningless frags. And you need to play Battlefield – capture points and interact with friends

The longer you play multiplayer, the more you see miscalculations. First, again the cards. They abandoned the linear level design, and the geography itself became more chaotic, but in many arenas you can easily keep opponents in respawn. Secondly, there are problems with the netcode and TTD: on your screen you die from a single shot (which is very annoying), and then on the repeat it turns out that the enemy managed to shoot you a burst of fire at you – and I saw just that, just before you not flown. “
