Announcing a new GRID , developers from Codemasters insisted that they were preparing a real breakthrough in the field of arcade racing. More than four hundred unique behavioral patterns for rivals in a single player campaign, the voices of real celebrities, the mechanics of “retaliation”, thanks to which opponents begin to chase an aggressive player – all this was to turn GRID into a game on the verge of realism. The idea was this: behind every car that you are trying to overtake on the track, now there is a living person with his own character, emotions and feelings. This means that rivalry should be felt more sharply than ever.

However, the drama and vendetta, on which the developers focused, did not justify themselves.

In terms of racing mechanics, Codemasters have not invented anything new – before us is still a classic racing arcade. The player’s task is simple: either to be the first to finish, or to ensure the victory of a partner. Winning is counted to the team whose representative is in first place in the race, but his companion may be at least at the very end of the tournament table – it does not matter anymore.

Types of races – as well as locations, tracks and cars – have become significantly less than in the previous parts, because of which the game seems to be a truncated version of itself. Especially disappointing the loss of endurance competitions, which were a feature of previous projects in the series.

Moreover, even in a reduced fleet, the variety is purely nominal: no matter what car you get in, they will all be equally badly driven – like stubborn fat cows. Regardless of the track, car model, brake sensitivity and other characteristics that can be changed before each race, all cars behave identically on the track.

In fact, you can simply select the car that you like most in appearance, repaint it in your favorite color and hit the road without thinking about anything else. The settings sliders are clearly inserted solely in order to arouse the player’s sense of self-importance. In fact, you have almost no influence on how the car will behave on the track, and this disappointment causes a lot more emotions than the notorious system of retaliation.

After the first few races, it seems that the developers of the new GRID regularly skipped physics at school. Professional racers, whose driving patterns were transferred to the project, such “realism” would surely infuriate – and he will certainly bring ordinary players more than once or twice to white heat. For example, in a corner, a car can suddenly turn backwards. And it doesn’t matter which buttons the player frantically presses at that moment: the car simply decided that it needs to spin another eighty degrees. In this situation, you can safely restart the race, because it will take so much time to turn around that it will be impossible to catch up with rivals.

On some tracks – for example, in Japan – tires slide on completely dry asphalt, like clockwork. This, of course, can be attributed to the increased humidity of the climate … But the game never mentions that such factors generally exist officially and they must be taken into account somehow.

But in the rain, the driving mechanics, on the contrary, do not change in anything but one detail: the car will turn with such a long delay, as if the driver receives SMS information that it’s time to turn the steering wheel.

And the physics of destruction in GRID is generally a separate kind of “art”. Whatever the car may encounter and wherever the blow falls, the first thing she is likely to fly off the hood. Yes, the sides will be beaten, the rear bumper will begin to tremble dangerously, having lost one of the mounts, but the first thing the car loses, as a rule, is precisely the lid of the engine compartment. Even if the “face” she almost did not fight.

And one more funny observation: an opponent’s car, having lost the wheel, does not lose speed at all and continues to overtake the player at turns, joyfully dousing him with sparks.

The player leaves the track paired with another rider, who must be selected in the main menu. Something similar was in NFS: Carbon – only there from the team on the track was much more useful.

It is up to the team-mate to give the team through a consultant who is constantly in touch with the player and comments on his every move (this quickly gets annoying). For example, you can ask a colleague to speed up and try to get ahead if he drags somewhere in the last places. However, it is not a fact that after this request the consultant will not answer: “He says that so far he does not have such an opportunity.” You can also ask your partner to behave more aggressively, but this most often means that he will not reach the finish line: the car will fall apart earlier.

It’s funny that at the same time, the partner does not give the player any indulgences and can, without any remorse, cut you off, push you off the track or at least not let yourself be equal. It is clear that when the struggle is for the first and second places, each for himself. But, damn it, it’s worth it to accidentally crash into your partner’s car at least once – and the consultant will immediately reproach for what he did: “Hey, he’s from your team actually!”

At first, the choice of partners is small, but after making money in the Career mode, you can buy new ones. However, it cannot be said that this is a profitable investment of resources: both partners and opponents behave the same way, plus or minus, despite the numerous artificial intelligence behaviors promised by the developers.

But the teammates were not added to the multiplayer, therefore, with a crowd of trolls who enter online mode only in order to clutter with impunity, the player will have to deal alone.

Soap opera on wheels

The retribution system in GRID is designed to dilute the standard racing gameplay with a fraction of the physical violence. It consists in the rule “eye for eye”: behave well – opponents also ride carefully. But if you start to cut the opponents, push them off the road and not let them fit into the turns, they will answer the same, causing a lot of problems on the track.

This mechanics could very well become a key feature of the game if it worked as it should. But the problem is that you simply will not be allowed to be a good person and not get involved in trouble. Sooner or later, the opponent will inevitably crash into your car, decide that it was you who were to blame, and open up the hunt for you. It turns out that due to the clumsy work of artificial intelligence, the competitor himself did not want to go around another car, he demolished it from the road, he himself was offended and began to take revenge. Ingenious!

Although the opposite is not uncommon: opponents simply ignore arrogant provocations on the part of the player. But even a partner can begin to take revenge, if he is very angry. Well, or if he, too, accidentally demolishes a player’s car, not wanting to spend an extra fraction of a second to go around it. At the same time, his behavior is not condemned by anyone: a racing consultant is silent at such moments like a fish.

But what’s hard to find fault with in GRID is the visual component: the game looks extremely juicy even though people and objects outside the track are devoid of detail. All other beauties simply distract attention from such trifles – in particular, the developers succeeded in sunset and rain. At the same time, despite the impressive level of graphics, the game has no problems with optimization: even a medium-power PC will easily show a beautiful picture.

Cars are completely real. If we ignore how crooked they are controlled, then they simply do not look enough. Everything is visible, even the smallest details: splashes of dirt, slight scratches on the paint, nets on the inner surface of the headlights. And when, after an impact, the car loses pieces of the body, all the details that should be there in real life are exposed under them.

One problem: for some reason, most of the colors in which you can paint the car during the race so wildly glare, as if it was covered with a mirror coating. It looks very cheap and blinds your eyes.
